I've been lucky enough to do a fair amount of traveling in my 21 years of life, but I have yet to feel like I properly documented my experiences. Since this trip is volunteer focused, I figured I would feel more motivated to keep up a blog in order to raise awareness for my project I will be apart of.
Starting tomorrow I will be taking my first trip down to South America! I will be going to Cusco, Peru to volunteer at local health clinics for 6 weeks. After 6 months of working and saving it seems unreal to me that this is all finally happening. I've been incessantly googling pictures of the city in order to get a glimpse of the beauty that awaits me in this country. I've also probably annoyed my doctor to no end asking him to write me prescriptions for all the various diseases I'm paranoid of getting. Taking microbiology this past semester really did not help the situation. Also since I wasn't brave enough to get a rabies shot, I have to practice some serious self control and not pet every street animal I encounter, no matter how cute.
I've also always loved traveling and discovering different ways of life, so I want to also try and share as much as I can about the Peruvian culture. I've always thought that you can tell a lot about a group of people based on the food that they eat, so this will also be a bit of a food blog as well. Based on my google searches, it seems like Peru has a very unique gastronomy scene; " Indigenous fusion" is the phrase that stuck out the most to me. I look forward to eating some surely very eclectic food, and I just purchased a diarrhea kit, so I should be fully prepared for whatever awaits me.
